What Is a QR Code and How Do They Work?

MintyQR Team June 12, 2025 6 min read

You've scanned them on menus, posters, and payment screens - but what exactly is a QR code, and how does it work? This beginner-friendly guide explains what QR codes are, how your phone reads them, the data they can store, and the difference between static and dynamic codes.

What Is a QR Code?

QR stands for 'Quick Response'. A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode - a pattern of black and white squares that stores information. Unlike a traditional barcode, which only holds data in one direction, a QR code stores data both horizontally and vertically, letting it pack in far more information and be read from any angle.

How Do QR Codes Work?

When you point your phone camera at a QR code, the camera detects the three large square 'finder patterns' in the corners, works out the code's orientation, and reads the pattern of modules (the small squares). It then decodes that pattern into data - usually a link - and acts on it, such as opening a website.

QR codes also include error correction, which is why they still scan even when a logo sits in the middle or part of the code is smudged or damaged.

What Can a QR Code Store?

  • Website links (the most common use)
  • WiFi network details for one-tap connection
  • Contact cards (vCard) that save to your phone
  • Plain text and phone numbers
  • Email addresses and pre-filled messages
  • App store links, payment details, and more

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

A static QR code stores its data directly inside the pattern - it's free, never expires, and works forever, but the content can't be changed once created. A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect link that points somewhere you can edit later, and often includes scan tracking, but it usually requires a paid subscription. For most everyday uses, a static code is all you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are QR codes safe?

The code itself is just data. Risk comes from where it leads, so always preview the link before opening it and avoid scanning codes from untrusted sources or stickers placed over originals.

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes never expire - they work as long as their destination stays live. Dynamic codes can expire if the subscription managing them lapses.

Do I need an app to scan one?

No. The built-in camera on virtually all modern iPhones and Android phones scans QR codes automatically.

Now that you know how QR codes work, you can create your own in seconds - for a link, WiFi, a contact card, and more. Try it free with MintyQR.
